What is the current fuel situation in Sri Lanka, and how do I manage it?

Fuel is readily available across Sri Lanka, but it is currently managed via a National Fuel Pass QR system to ensure stable distribution. For your rental tuk-tuk, you will receive a guaranteed weekly quota of 20 Liters. Because tuk-tuks are highly fuel-efficient, this 20L allows you to drive approximately 500km per week—which is plenty of distance for exploring the island’s coastal roads and mountain towns! Your quota automatically renews every Sunday. We will help you set up your QR code when you pick up your vehicle, so fueling up at any local station is completely hassle-free.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a special Sri Lankan permit?

To drive legally in Sri Lanka, you need three documents: your Home Country License, a physical International Driving Permit (IDP), and a Sri Lankan Recognition Permit. Important Update for 2026: The Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) now strictly requires a physical IDP (1949 Geneva Convention) to issue your local tuk-tuk permit. They do not accept digital or “e-IDPs.” If you do not have a physical IDP, please visit your home country’s Automobile Association (such as AAA, AA, or RAC) and obtain one before you leave your country. Don’t worry about the local paperwork—once you have your IDP, Tuktukslr Tours will process the AAC recognition permit for you so it is ready when you arrive! Do I need prior experience to drive a tuk-tuk?

You must be an experienced and confident driver in general, but you do not need any prior experience specifically driving a tuk-tuk! In fact, most of our customers have never driven a three-wheeler before arriving in Sri Lanka. As long as you are comfortable driving a standard vehicle back home, you have nothing to worry about. Every rental includes a free, comprehensive driving lesson with our expert instructors. We will teach you exactly how to handle the manual gears, brake safely, and maneuver the tuk-tuk until you feel 100% confident to start your adventure.

What happens if my tuk-tuk breaks down or I need help?

A tuk-tuk is an economy-class vehicle designed for adventure, which means minor issues can occasionally occur on the road. However, we work hard to prevent this; every Tuktukslr vehicle undergoes strict preventative maintenance before every rental to ensure it is in top mechanical condition. If you do face any trouble, don’t worry—help is always available. You can contact us anytime, and our team will guide you with all the information you need. Since tuk-tuks are the most popular vehicle in Sri Lanka, maintenance and spare parts are available in every village, and we will help you manage any situation so you can get back to your adventure quickly.

How much luggage can fit inside a rental tuk-tuk?

A standard tuk-tuk comfortably seats two adults in the back, plus the driver. Behind the back seat, there is a secure storage trunk that easily fits two large backpacks (up to 65L each) or two medium-sized suitcases, plus a couple of smaller daypacks.

Where am I allowed to drive, and what is the speed limit?

You can drive your tuk-tuk on almost all of Sri Lanka’s beautiful coastal roads, mountain passes, and rural paths! The only exceptions are the Expressways (E-roads), where three-wheelers are strictly prohibited. Always use Google Maps set to “Avoid Tolls” or “Motorcycle” mode to ensure you are routed on tuk-tuk-friendly roads.

A great way to see Sri Lanka - An outstanding experience from start to finish.
