FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Legal & Documentation (The "Must-Knows")

What driving license do I need to rent a tuk-tuk?

Answer: Your home country license + a Physical 1949 Geneva Convention IDP + the Sri Lankan AAC Recognition Permit

Can I use a Digital or e-IDP?

Answer: No! The AAC strictly rejects digital IDPs in 2026. You must bring the physical booklet

Do I have to go to the AAC office in Colombo myself?

Answer: Nope! Send us your documents 48 hours before you arrive, and Tuktukslr will pre-process your local permit for you.

Before you submit AAC Recognition Permit, Learn more about License Guidelines & Requirements here.

What happens if I get pulled over by the traffic police?

Answer: It’s very common and usually just a routine check! Just smile, hand them your physical IDP, AAC permit, and rental papers. Once they see you are fully legal, they usually just want to chat and take a selfie!

Driving & Safety

Do I need prior experience driving a tuk-tuk?

Answer: Not at all, as long as you are a confident driver in general. Most of our guests have never seen a tuk-tuk up close before arriving in Sri Lanka. If you are comfortable with the “flow” of traffic and have driven a manual vehicle or motorbike before, you’ll pick it up in no time.

Every Tuktukslr rental includes a free, 1-on-1 driving lesson with our expert instructors. We stay with you on quiet backroads until you have mastered the “clutch and twist” gear system and feel 100% ready to tackle the main roads.

Are tuk-tuks manual or automatic?

Answer: They are manual. They use a simple “clutch and twist” gear system on the left handlebar. We’ll teach you exactly how to master it.

What is the speed limit for a tuk-tuk in Sri Lanka?

Answer: Strictly 40 km/h island-wide. It’s the perfect speed for sightseeing safely!.

Can I drive my tuk-tuk on the Expressways?

Answer: No. Tuk-tuks are strictly prohibited on all E-class expressways. You get to take the scenic A and B roads instead

Is it safe to drive at night?

Answer: We strongly advise against night driving. Roads are poorly lit, and roaming wildlife (like elephants!) are common in certain areas after dark.

Who has the right of way on Sri Lankan roads?

Answer: The Golden Rule: The big public buses are the “Kings of the Road.” Always give them plenty of space!.

Fuel & The Vehicle

How does the fuel system work in 2026?

Answer: We use the highly organized National Fuel Pass QR system. Your rental comes with a pre-registered QR code.

How much fuel do I get, and how far will it take me?

Answer: You get a 20L weekly quota. Because tuk-tuks are fuel-efficient, 20 liters will take you roughly 500 kilometers

How many passengers can fit inside?

Answer: A standard tuk-tuk fits 1 driver in the front, and up to 2 adult passengers comfortably in the back seat.

How much luggage can we bring?

Answer: There is a storage shelf behind the back seat. Soft luggage only (backpacks/duffels). Hard-shell suitcases do not fit well.

Support & Maintenance

What happens if my tuk-tuk breaks down?

Answer: While we focus on strict Preventative Maintenance before every trip, tuk-tuks are adventure machines! If you get a flat tire or a hiccup, we have a 24/7 WhatsApp safety net to connect you to a mechanic in any village

What does your insurance cover?

Answer: Comprehensive insurance covering third-party liability and damage to the vehicle, giving you total peace of mind.

What comes "in the kit" with the tuk-tuk?

Answer: We include rain curtains for sudden showers, a lockable glove box for valuables, a phone holder for navigation, and a spare tire.

Logistics

Where can I pick up and drop off the vehicle?

Answer: Detail your shop location, and whether you offer airport delivery or hotel drop-offs.

What is an International Drivers Permit - IDP?

An International Driving Permit (IDP), also sometimes called an International Driver’s License, is a document that translates your national driver’s license into multiple languages, allowing you to drive legally in countries that require it, when accompanied by your valid national license.

Here’s a more detailed explanation:

  • The IDP facilitates communication with authorities and car rental agencies in countries where English isn’t widely spoken, helping to avoid language barriers.
  • It’s a translation of your existing driver’s license, not a replacement for it.
  • Some countries require an IDP for tourists or visitors to drive legally, while others may not require it.
  • IDPs are typically valid for one year from the date of issue.
  • You can apply for an IDP through your country Automobile Association
  • IDPs are recognized in over 150 countries.
What happened if my tuktuk is stolen?

You should report the theft to the police and us right away. We will help you with the insurance and a new tuktuk. Tuktuk theft is very uncommon here, but you need to keep your keys safe.
